You unzipped the template, opened a terminal, ran flutter run, and got a screen of red text instead of an app. This article covers the Flutter build errors after purchase that our product guides list, with the cause and fix for each. Almost all of them come from the setup, not the template code: a Flutter version below the template's minimum, the wrong Java, a missing SDK, or generated files that haven't been generated yet.
Work through the triage order first. It clears most problems before you need the error-by-error sections.
Quick triage for Flutter build errors after purchase
Run these from the project root, in this order. Re-try your build after each step.
Step 1: Run flutter doctor
flutter doctor -v
Every Stacklyn guide says to run flutter doctor and fix anything it reports before building. The -v flag adds detail, including the path after "Java binary at:", which tells you which Java Flutter is using.
Step 2: Check your Flutter version against the template's minimum
flutter --version
Compare the result with your template's minimum, taken from its product page and guide:
| Template | Minimum Flutter |
|---|---|
| AutoLog | 3.38 |
| StockPilot, Vet Vault, StyleBook, SubZero, Rent Folio, Zenith | 3.44 |
| CleanSync, TutorTrack, MemberKeep, Agri Ops | 3.47 |
If you're below it, run flutter upgrade.
Step 3: Use Java 17
Our guides specify JDK 17 for Android builds. In Android Studio, set Settings > Build Tools > Gradle > Gradle JDK to 17 or newer. From the terminal, SubZero's guide points Flutter at the right JDK with:
flutter config --jdk-dir "path/to/jdk17"
Step 4: Clean and fetch packages
flutter clean
flutter pub get
Step 5: Generate code if the error mentions a .g.dart file
The Hive CE and Isar templates use generated adapters. If the compiler complains about a missing .g.dart file, run:
dart run build_runner build --delete-conflicting-outputs
TutorTrack's guide says you need this on a fresh download. The other guides say you need it after changing a model.
Step 6 (iOS only): Install pods
cd ios && pod install && cd ..
If the build still fails, find your message below.
Android errors
"No Android SDK found"
Cause: Flutter can't find an Android SDK, usually because Android Studio isn't installed or the SDK lives in a custom folder.
Fix: Install Android Studio, open SDK Manager, install the Android SDK and the command-line tools, then accept the licences:
flutter doctor --android-licenses
Several of our guides (SubZero, Vet Vault, CleanSync, MemberKeep) name Android SDK 36. If your SDK is somewhere else, tell Flutter where:
flutter config --android-sdk <path>
Gradle sync or build fails
Cause: Our guides don't quote one message here, because Gradle failures read differently on every machine. The usual cause is an old Android Studio or a Gradle JDK below 17. Recent templates use Android Gradle Plugin 9 with Gradle 9 (TutorTrack, CleanSync, Agri Ops and MemberKeep list AGP 9.1 with Gradle 9.3 or 9.3.1).
Fix: Update Android Studio to the latest stable version, set the Gradle JDK to 17 or newer, then run flutter clean. Two product-specific notes from the guides:
- CleanSync and Vet Vault: if your environment can't use AGP 9, set
com.android.applicationto8.11.1inandroid/settings.gradle.ktsand the Gradle wrapper togradle-8.14-all.zip. - MemberKeep: keep
android.builtInKotlin=falseandandroid.newDsl=falseinandroid/gradle.properties. The guide says to leave them until every plugin supports AGP 9's built-in Kotlin.
Gradle runs out of memory
Cause: Gradle's memory setting in android/gradle.properties is more than your machine can spare.
Fix: SubZero's guide says to lower org.gradle.jvmargs, for example to -Xmx4G.
"Namespace not specified" after changing the package ID
Cause: You changed the app ID, but the Android files don't agree with each other.
Fix: SubZero's guide: change namespace and applicationId in android/app/build.gradle.kts, move the MainActivity.kt folder to match, and update its package line. The full process is in how to change your Flutter app's package name.
Release build signed with the debug key
Cause: SubZero's guide describes this as the warning "key.properties not found"; StockPilot's calls it the "signed with the debug key" warning. Either way, Gradle didn't find android/key.properties, so the release build fell back to the debug key. Google Play won't accept that build.
Fix: Create the upload keystore and key.properties as covered in signing your first Flutter release build.
iOS errors
You need a Mac with Xcode for every step here.
CocoaPods error during pod install or build
Cause: Stale pods or an outdated local spec repo. Our guides don't quote a single message, because CocoaPods errors vary.
Fix: Most of our guides use this sequence:
cd ios
rm -rf Pods Podfile.lock
pod repo update
pod install
cd ..
SubZero's guide runs flutter clean and flutter pub get first, then pod repo update and pod install, without deleting the lock file.
Deployment target errors
Cause: StockPilot's guide lists these alongside CocoaPods errors. The iOS minimum for StockPilot and AutoLog is 14.0, and the Podfile has to match.
Fix: AutoLog's guide sets this in ios/Podfile:
platform :ios, '14.0'
Then run pod install again.
StyleBook builds but crashes on launch on iOS
Cause: The Google Mobile Ads SDK needs GADApplicationIdentifier in ios/Runner/Info.plist.
Fix: Check that key is present, per StyleBook's guide.
Dart and pub errors
"The current Dart SDK version is X, requires ^3.9.2"
That's how SubZero's guide writes it, with X standing in for your version. Other guides list it as "Unsupported Flutter version", "SDK constraint" errors or "Version solving failed".
Cause: Your Flutter (and the Dart it bundles) is older than the template's minimum.
Fix: flutter upgrade, then flutter clean && flutter pub get. Check the table in Step 2.
"Building with plugins requires symlink support" (Windows)
Cause: Flutter needs symlink support to build with plugins, and on Windows our guides fix it the same way every time.
Fix: Turn on Developer Mode in Windows settings. StockPilot's guide opens the setting with:
start ms-settings:developers
Then run flutter pub get again.
Compile error about a missing .g.dart file or registerAdapters
Cause: The generated Hive or Isar adapters haven't been built, or a model changed after they were.
Fix: Run dart run build_runner build --delete-conflicting-outputs. MemberKeep's guide runs flutter pub get first. One exception: SubZero's guide says its Hive adapter, subscription_model.g.dart, is maintained by hand.
AppLocalizations or app_localizations.dart not found
Cause: The translation files haven't been generated.
Fix: Run flutter pub get or flutter gen-l10n. StyleBook's guide adds that every key must exist in all four .arb files.
StockPilot shows "Please use a phone or tablet"
Cause: No phone was connected, so flutter run started the app on Chrome or Windows. StockPilot only runs on Android and iOS.
Fix: Run flutter devices, then flutter run -d <device-id> with an Android or iOS device or emulator.
If the build still fails
Email support@stacklynlabs.com with your flutter --version output, your platform and the full error message, as our guides ask.
Some setups take longer than that. A Gradle error can name a plugin when the real problem is your JDK, and every wrong guess costs you another full build. If you'd rather not keep guessing, we can set up and build the template for you.
The Stacklyn Labs Help Center has the other setup guides for our templates.
